9 - 11 - 2001 Remembered

May we never forget what happened on this date. May we never allow anyone to put some insane spin on what happened or attempt to dumb down our sensitivities or our emotions that resulted from that terrorist act. May the passage of time not lead us into apathy. May we never forget the horror, the shock, the terror, the pain, the grief, and the subsequent anger.

May we always be aware that a huge part of the battle against Islamic fascism is being fought in the hearts and minds of men and women in America as well as around the world. May we stand fast in the face of such wickedness and duplicity of our enemies at home and abroad. May we continue to search them out and destroy them wherever they hide.

May we always live in such a way as to be a shinning example for other nations so they can see the fruits of freedom and democracy. May our lives always reflect our belief in God and our Christian faith.

Almighty God, grant us the strength of will to do these things, for then we will prevail; however, if our faith is lacking or our will is weak, we will die and our children will live out their earthly lives in subjugation to tyrannical leaders.

The facts are clear -- America was brutally attacked by Islamic terrorists and it was a declaration of war against our way of life. They are still out there, as well as within our own borders -- spiritual wickedness in high places -- and they still hate us. Are we paying attention?

May God help us.

The apathy has begun. Noonan wrote of the younger generation who do not talk of this. Their parents need a good thrashing for abdication of historical duty.

We're not paying attention or Hussein Obama would not be in the WH. He's a muslim sympathizer. There's no war on terror anymore and we will be hit again.

As you may be aware, The Won is seeking to desecrate 9/11 as a "Day of National Service" instead, with the excuse that "We need to move on".

I recall, years ago when we were toppling the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, the Taliban leader Mullah Omar whining to some journalist that we should "Get over it!".

To which my response must be not only "No!", but "Hell No!!!".

Like many, I was at work on that day, learning of it when co-workers told me to check out CNN on the internet, and watched it play out, watching with horror when the buildings collapsed with so many still inside.

The next day, Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts, normally a fairly angry liberal, wrote a column ( reproduced at WTC Trbute - We'll Go Forward From this Moment ) in which he observed...

Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous emotional energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, we walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle to know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming majority of us, people of faith, believers in a just and loving God.

Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us weak. You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals.

And concluded with...

So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange:

You don't know my people.
You don't know what we're capable of.
You don't know what you just started.

But you're about to learn.

THIS is how I'll remember 9/11, for a VERY long time to come.

Hi Mary,

I read that column of Noonan's and it disturbed me -- a lot of her writings have had that effect of me in the last year or so.

I have no memory of the bombing of Pear Harbor but my mother made sure I knew everything she knew about it. WW II was a frequent topic at my home when I was growing up and that's the way it should be, IMO. Parents fail their children when they don't teach them the things of which they know well themselves. But what do I know, I only raised three.

Greg, I fear you are indeed correct. The very fact that the majority of voters elected Obama frightens me. I understand the reasons given -- backlash, vote against Bush and Repubs, etc. But to vote for change for change's sake is a very sad excuse. And now look what we're stuck with.

Sam, I remember that column from Pitts. It was excellent then and worth re-reading each year. Thanks for the refresher.
